Matthew “Coach” Mentink
Coach is a lifelong practitioner of wrestling earning 3rd place at Nebraska’s High School State Wrestling Tournament in 1990. He was a scholarship wrestler for Dana College in Blair, Nebraska from 1990 to 1995 where he qualified for Nationals and was voted the most valuable wrestler. Since 1995 Coach has been the physical education instructor for the Woodbine Schools in Woodbine, Iowa. He is a multi-discipline coach for football, wrestling, track, and strength/ conditioning. In his 21 years coaching he has produced 35 state qualifiers with 13 of them being state place winners and he has earned 298 career dual wins. In 2009 Coach began training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Woodbine Martial Arts under Scott Thompson, a Fabio Santos Jiu Jitsu black belt, and he is currently a 4 stripe purple belt. In 2013 he began training under Rodrigo Salazar of Denver Jiu Jitsu, also a Fabio Santos Jiu Jitsu black belt. Coach has a passion for the art of jiu jitsu. Securing a donation of gis through MMA Warehouse, he teaches children of all ages in his physical education classes. In 2015, “Iowa Jiu Jitsu + More” was created offering 4 classes per week to all ages and skill levels. His years as an athlete, coach, and teacher are obvious when you attend his classes.
Brent is a 3 stripe Brazilian Jiu Jitsu purple belt under Fabio Santos Jiu Jitsu. In 2009 Brent began his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey at Woodbine Martial Arts under Scott Thompson, a Fabio Santos Jiu Jitsu black belt. In 2013 he began training under Rodrigo Salazar of Denver Jiu Jitsu, also a Fabio Santos Jiu Jitsu black belt. He has competed in numerous IBJJF tournaments earning gold medals in 2012 as a blue belt and 2013 as a purple belts at the IBJJF Chicago Open. Brent was lead instructor for Saturday classes at Woodbine Martial Arts for 3 years and recently received his State of Iowa Coaching Certificate to assist Coach Mentink with the wrestling team. He has a passion for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and when there is not a class available he train with his son in his basement or arranges to train with Coach. The term “jiu jitsu lifestyle” definitely applies to him.
